[email protected] for rates and scheduling Craig Macrae is a professional musician and educator. He has been performing on guitar and bass across New England and in the Midwest since the 1970s. Over this period he has played jazz, blues, country, rock, R&B, Musical theater, salsa, Latin jazz, pop, folk, and Middle Eastern music in venues large and small. He recently relocated to Vermont after 20 years on the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he taught music theory courses, World Music composition, and founded the Berklee’s first Middle Eastern Music Ensemble. Craig enjoys teaching guitar to students of all ages and at all levels. His basic philosophy of teaching is to encourage students to gradually master the fundamentals, and then apply their skills to playing the music that most excites them. Craig earned a BA in classical guitar at the University of Southern Maine, MM in Jazz Studies at Indiana University, and a PhD (ABD) in Ethnomusicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His focus in ethnomusicology is the music of the Middle East and Central Asia, with extended study in Uzbekistan. Craig has had many wonderful teachers, mentors, and colleagues; he feels it is important to share the wealth. His most recent passion is playing Arabic and Turkish music on the oud. |
