Zoe & Cloyd
with Ben Krakauer
Saturday, July 15th

Picture

Klezgrass. This one word may best describe the vast musical world of Asheville, NC duo Zoe & Cloyd. Springing from rich and complementary traditions, the artistic stylings of fiddler/vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist John Cloyd Miller fit together in a harmonic dovetail. Zoe & Cloyd delight audiences with soaring harmonies and heartfelt songwriting, seamlessly combining original bluegrass,
klezmer, old-time and folk with sincerity and zeal.
Descending from a lineage of klezmer and jazz musicians, Natalya trained classically in her home state of Massachusetts before discovering old-time and bluegrass and moving south in 2004. John, a twelfth generation North Carolinian and grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler, Jim Shumate, is a gifted singer and songwriter, placing 1st in the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and the Hazel Dickens Songwriting Contest. Long-time fixtures of the Asheville, NC music scene, the pair were founding members of the lauded roots trio, Red June, later shifting to Zoe & Cloyd after the birth of their daughter in 2015. Since that time, the pair has released four acclaimed albums, performed across the US, and appeared in Season 5 of the nationally syndicated PBS show, David Holt’s State of Music in 2021.

“I’m a sucker for great duo harmony singing, well-written originals, choice material, and fine playing—all of these are here with Zoe & Cloyd. I absolutely love them!” – Alice Gerrard

Zoe and Cloyd graced our presence at Seven Stars back in June of 2019. We are so excited to have them back!
On July 15th they will be joined by  Ben Krakauer on banjo.

Ben Krakauer is a masterful banjo player and composer rooted in bluegrass, jazz, and new acoustic music. He has toured with David Grisman, was a founding member of Old School Freight Train, and has recorded for Acoustic Disc, CMH Records, and the Fiddle Masters series. Ben is also an ethnomusicologist and Assistant Professor of Music and Traditional Music Program Coordinator at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC. His new solo album, Hidden Animals, will be released in March of 2023.

“Ben Krakauer is one of my favorite banjo players and favorite human beings. His banjo playing is incredibly swinging, grooving, and wildly inventive, but always grounded in the best of tradition. Check him out right now!” - Matt Glaser, jazz violinist & Artistic Director of the American Roots Music Program at Berklee College of Music.
